Industrial park: Edo community begs govt to pay compensation for land

By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—AGBONMWONBA community in Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area of Edo State has expressed concern that the state government was yet to pay compensation for the land it acquired for the establishment of an industrial park in the state, urging the government to speed processes for payment.

The community also expressed concern over the planned naming of the Industrial Park after its neighbouring Iguomom community, when much of the hectares of land acquired for the purpose was from them, adding  that the breaking ground ceremony of the industrial park which was performed by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo was performed at the heart of their community.

However, Special Adviser to  Governor Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, while responding to the issue of payment of compensation for the acquired land said, “What the government is doing now is to erect a perimeter fencing in the 13.1kilometers land.

“After the completion of the fencing, we will then be in a position to know the communities captured in the project. Then the issue of payment of compensation will follow.”

The community in a letter to Governor Godwin Obaseki through their counsel, Olayiwola Afobabi, appealed to the governor to name the project after it because of its commitment and contributions to the project more so, “when our client do not want  to lose its identity to another community when the park becomes fully operational.”

The community however, commended the state government for the heroic efforts and initiative geared towards bringing meaningful development  and financial benefits to the community and its environs.

Their counsel said, “Our client have further instructed us to very humbly remind His Excellency that they are very proud that you deemed it fit to extend such a great developmental projects to their community. And to further express great pleasure that the very great point where in the foundation stone of this project was laid is at the very heart centre of our client’s community.”
